Grants History
The Board of Directors of the Los Medanos
Community Healthcare District is working for the improvement
of Pittsburg and Bay Point community health and wellness programs.
Our accomplishments to date include:
- The former hospital building reopened as the Contra Costa
County Pittsburg Health Center in January 2002 after three
years of extensive building renovations.
- The first grant of $15,000 in the LMCHD Grant Program
was approved in February 2001 to purchase two additional
dental chairs for the local Pittsburg La Clinica Dental
Clinic on East Leland Road.
- In May 2001 , the Board of Directors committed $20,000
per year for two years to the LMC Nursing Program which
allowed the hiring of an additional nursing instructor in
the registered nursing program and resulted in an increase
of 12 additional nursing students being trained to help
in reducing the critical nursing shortage.
- The LMCHD Eyeglasses Grant was approved in 2001 in partnership
with Site for Sore Eyes in Pittsburg and Dr. Eileen Linder
in Antioch to provide eyeglasses for needy elementary school
children. To date this program has provided eyeglasses to
over 60 children.
- In August 2002, the following grants were awarded:
- A $17,397.98 grant to the Bay Point Family Health
Center for the purchase of two air driven compressor
dental units with attachments as well as a cavitron/scaler
to be used for deep scaling and cleaning in their children's
dental project.
- A $13,750 grant to Diablo Valley Aids Center for the
distribution of food and vitamin supplements to AIDS
patients in the Pittsburg/Bay Point area.
- A $10,000 grant to New Connections in downtown Pittsburg
who provide counseling for AIDS and substance abuse
patients.
- In January 2003, a partnership was approved with the Contra
Costa County Health Services Department to initiate a pilot
program on childhood obesity. The program is the N.E.W.
(Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness) KIDS PROGRAM. It was
developed because intervention is the only program that
works with children, and obesity leads to heart conditions
and diabetes. The program will include a clinical portion
and physical activity and will be presented with the Healthy
Neighborhood Program by the Health Services Department.
- In January 2003, the Student Eyeglasses Grant was amended
to include preschoolers in need of corrective eyeglasses
and funding approved for 25 children to be referred for
eyeglasses with the possibility of increasing funds if needed.•
In June 2003, the Board of Directors committed $25.000 per
year for two years to the LMC Nursing Program which allows
the hiring of an additional nursing instructor in the registered
nursing program and provides funding for the Nursing Department
clerical staff which will result in an increase of 12 additional
nursing students being trained to help in reducing the continuing
critical nursing shortage.
- In June 2003, the Board of Directors approved expanding
the Student Eyeglasses Grant to include all schools District
wide so that middle school and high school students in need
of corrective eyeglasses will be included. When the initial
$15,000 grant funds are spent, the Board will consider increasing
funding for this grant.
- In October 2003, the following grants were approved and
will be awarded in November:
- A $10,000 grant to Diablo Valley Aids Center for the
